A proposed architecture for autonomous intelligence in which knowledge can accumulate — but authority must be earned through verification.

Cumulative Certified Autonomous Intelligence (CCAI) defines a class of artificial intelligence systems in which autonomous investigation, cumulative knowledge and epistemic certification are separated by architecture.
A CCAI system can investigate, propose, test, verify, retain and reuse knowledge while epistemic authority remains separated from generation and reasoning.
Knowledge is not accepted because a model produced it. Claims must pass an independent verification and certification procedure before they can acquire certified status. When the available evidence does not justify certification or refutation, the system abstains.
Certified knowledge can persist, accumulate, be composed with other established knowledge, and become input to subsequent autonomous investigations.
CCAI is presented as a proposed class of artificial intelligence systems. The CCAI architecture — the principles and authority boundaries published on this site, normatively in the Charter — defines membership in that class. CCAI is not claimed here as an established scientific category, an adopted standard, or a validated technology.
This site is the canonical public reference for the term “Cumulative Certified Autonomous Intelligence”.
Two elements define the architecture: a strict separation of authorities, and a normative investigation loop.
Generation, selection, memory and certification are different authorities.
A generative model may formulate hypotheses. An autonomous agent may choose what to investigate. Persistent memory may retain and compose prior knowledge. None of those operations is sufficient to transform a claim into certified knowledge.
Certification must remain independently governed by explicit verification rules and evidence.
Here, “independent” means a separation of epistemic authority: generation or proposal cannot confer certification authority upon itself merely by producing or selecting a claim. It does not require separate physical machines, separate companies, separate foundation models, separate software processes or human verification — an implementation may use different technical arrangements.
The LLM may propose.
The Agent may choose.
Memory may compose.
None of them may certify.
The normative unit of operation is an investigation loop. Its stages, in order:

Every verification that can alter epistemic status returns through the certification decision. Verification never silently promotes a claim into memory as established knowledge.
RECOMPUTE closes the loop: when underlying evidence, established knowledge or context changes, dependent conclusions are recomputed and their epistemic status reconsidered. The order of the stages is part of the definition, not an implementation detail.
REMEMBER does not mean that only certified claims enter memory. A CCAI implementation may retain refuted, abstained, hypothetical or other epistemically labelled material when useful. The requirement is that retained material preserves its epistemic status and must not be silently represented as established knowledge.
CCAI distinguishes what kind of knowledge something is, and separately, what a certification procedure concluded about it. The two axes must never be conflated.
Information directly present in the evidence or data.
A structure, relation or regularity recovered from evidence through investigation.
A candidate explanation, mechanism or relation that has not satisfied the requirements for establishment.
Knowledge that has satisfied the applicable verification requirements.
The applicable certification requirements have been satisfied.
The candidate claim has been contradicted under the applicable verification procedure.
Available evidence is insufficient to justify either certification or refutation.
ABSTAIN is not failure. It is an explicit epistemic outcome — the system’s way of keeping insufficient evidence visible instead of converting it into a conclusion.
A discovered relation is not thereby a causal relation. Association, exact relation, prediction and causal identification are distinct claims, and CCAI treats them as such.
Traditional isolated inference can effectively begin again for each task: whatever an investigation establishes leaves no structured trace for the next one.
A CCAI architecture is designed so that verified knowledge from earlier investigations can become structured input to later investigations:
Established knowledge may become evidence, constraint, representation or investigative material for subsequent autonomous inquiry, while retaining its provenance and epistemic status.
Memory does not make a proposition true.
Memory preserves material whose epistemic status is known.
CCAI memory is not merely archival storage: established knowledge can become active material for future autonomous investigation. Composition or reuse never automatically transfers certification to a new claim.
CCAI does not certify intelligence. It certifies claims.
Certification attaches to a claim, within an applicable procedure, evidence and context. It does not attach to an AI system as a whole, nor to intelligence itself.
“Certified” does not mean:

This distinction is important: certification is a property of a claim relative to a procedure and its evidence — not a promise beyond them.
Autonomy refers to the ability of the system to participate in an investigation loop:
Autonomy does not imply unrestricted epistemic authority. A system may act on its own initiative at every stage above and still hold no power to certify what it produces. That distinction is fundamental to CCAI.
CCAI is a class of systems defined by an architecture — not a component. Each of the following technologies may participate in a CCAI implementation; none alone satisfies the architecture that defines the class.
These are conceptual distinctions, not judgments of those technologies, which remain valuable components — including inside CCAI implementations.

A claim can acquire certified status only through an independent verification procedure appropriate to that claim.
The authority that determines certification must be independent from the act of proposing the claim.
The verification mechanism and the rules governing certification must be explicitly identifiable and auditable.
When evidence is insufficient to establish or refute a claim, the system must be able to abstain.
Uncertainty must never be silently converted into certainty.
Knowledge must carry an explicit epistemic status.
Observed, discovered, hypothetical and established information must not be silently conflated.
Every material claim must retain sufficient provenance to determine where it came from, what evidence supported it, how it was transformed and how its status was obtained.
Certification decisions must be reconstructable.
The system should preserve the evidence, transformations, tests, decisions and relevant machine actions necessary to audit the path to an epistemic outcome.
Established knowledge may persist beyond the investigation in which it was obtained.
Memory is not merely conversation history. It is structured scientific or epistemic material available for subsequent investigation.
Previously established knowledge may be combined to construct new candidate relations, representations, hypotheses or tests.
Composition does not itself confer certification. Composed claims must undergo verification.
Knowledge should be represented with enough context, provenance, support and epistemic status to permit justified reuse across later investigations where applicable.
A CCAI system must not force a relation, orientation, mechanism or causal conclusion merely because a result is expected or desirable.
Absence of sufficient evidence must remain visible.
Association, exact relation, prediction and causal identification are distinct claims.
Causal status must not be assigned unless the available evidence and applicable identification procedure justify it.
Where certification is defined by deterministic rules, generative or statistical components may assist discovery but must not override those certification rules.
The authority boundary must remain explicit.
Where underlying evidence, established knowledge or relevant context changes, dependent conclusions must be capable of being recomputed and their status reconsidered.
A third party examining the retained evidence and rules should be able, in principle, to understand why a claim received its epistemic status.
The durable product of an investigation is not merely a generated answer.
It is the body of traceable knowledge that survives verification and can participate in future investigation.
